Disabling “Ink Counter” on Canon Printers for PG-30/40/50 and CL-31/41/51 Cartridges

Canon software/firmware on printers that use PG-30/40/50 and CL-31/41/51 cartridges give the option to disable the ink counter by following given screen prompts. Disabling the ink counter allows a new cartridge and refilled cartridge to print to fade. If the ink counter is not disabled the cartridge, new or refilled will only print until the programmed drop count has been reached for that cartridge.

After installing cartridges software prompt below appears, Select OK. The same prompt is given for new or refilled cartridges. The printer does not print an automatic alignment page when a new cartridge is installed; cartridge alignment is only preformed by manually selecting Print Head Alignment under the Maintenance tab in the printer software.

After the first print job is queued or sent to the printer the software prompt below appears because the cartridges drop count was reached prior to refilling. A print status prompt will also appear in the lower right side of the screen. The cartridge is locked; if “Cancel Printing” is selected in either prompt the print job will be canceled and will reappear with every print job. The ink counter can be disabled by pressing the “Stop/Reset” Button on the printer and holding for 5 seconds or until the prompt disappears on all-in-one printers, “Resume/Cancel” Button on printers. The prompts will be given for each cartridge, black and color. The ink counter will remain disabled as long as the cartridges remain installed in the printer. The print status prompt in the lower right side of the screen will appear with every print job but no further action is needed to print.

If a cartridge is removed from the printer for refilling before it was “empty” the cartridge will print until the drop count had been reached. When the cartridge drop count is reached the software prompts will appear.

There is an advantage in being able to turn-off the ink counter; once it’s been turned off a cartridge will print to fade without additional prompts and random screen prompts will not appear throughout life like refilled HP and Lexmark cartridges. The disadvantage is the ink counter has to be disabled at the PC/printer.
